MEC SIZAKELE BLAMES JOBURG MAYOR MASHABA FOR RECENT XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS

JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has directly accused Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba of being responsible for recent xenophobic attacks.

Nkosi-Malobane was speaking on the sidelines of the post-State of the Province debrief at the Gauteng Legislature on Tuesday.

Foreigners have been attacked in Jeppestown this week with attempts to loot shops.

Mashaba has repeatedly denied that his comments on illegal immigrants have led to the violence in the city.

Nkosi-Malobane says Mashaba’s statement on illegal immigrants resulted in her department having its hands full.

“If he didn’t actually refer to people as animals and criminals and all the crimes happening in Johannesburg, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

She says leaders must be careful what message they send out.

“Also, when he went to Rosettenville, he didn’t stop. He didn’t stop his negative talk, he continued and now this thing has spread to other areas. All leaders must take responsibility for what they say.”

Nkosi-Malobane says resources used to fight other crimes such as hijacking and house robbery have now been shifted to curb the xenophobic violence.
