The Ohaneze Ndigbo South Africa (ONSA) says that it is dismayed, though not surprised that the Nigerian consulate has excluded them in a meeting it has called with presidents, vice presidents, and secretaries-general of sixteen Nigerian organizations in South Africa.
ONSA released a statement seen by Nigerians In South Africa on Monday, 1st June, stating its views as they reacted to a communique emanating from the Nigerian consulate.
“We have noted with dismay, though not surprised, that the convener of this conference willfully excluded Ohaneze Ndigbo South Africa in this parly. As an umbrella body of the largest ethnic nationality in the Republic of South Africa, we find it very derogatory and disrespectful on the side of the Conference Organisers to compile such an enlarged and exhaustive list with the exclusion of Igbo apex and umbrella association in South Africa.”
The organisation says that they are aware of “divide and rule tactics by inviting some organs of Ohaneze while leaving others out.”
ONSA further states that “this is a calculated attempt to perpetuate the same strategy emplored by the government back home where Igbos are used against Igbo interests.”
The proposed meeting is about ‘Reaffirming our unity and ensuring efficient consular services to Nigerians in South Africa.’ The meeting is said to take place at the Nigerian consulate with His excellency Malik Mike Ahmed Abdul in Illovo, Johannesburg at 10 am on Wednesday, 2nd June 2021.
The Ohaneze leadership says it has decided not to be uninvited guests or gate crashers in an event “it was not considered fit to attend.”
In the statement, the aggrieved organization says that it has taken certain decisions such as any ONSA member who attends the event as a group or individual shall be sanctioned accordingly.
“Such sanctions shall include but NOT limited to immediate removal from all ONSA forums, outright ban from ONSA activities and or outright ostracization all together.
“Ohaneze Ndigbo South Africa will not allow a few selfish individuals to truncate our collective resolve to reposition ONSA to its lost glories.”
The group further says that they cannot be manipulated or blackmailed into subjecting Ndigbo to second-class citizens.
