Nigerians are no longer required to carry original passports but certified copies in South Africa-Consulate

Following a meeting of His Excellency, the Consul General of Nigeria to South Africa, Hon. Malik Ahmed Abdul, with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) on 20th August 2021, the Consulate General of Nigeria is pleased to announce that henceforth, certified color copies of Nigerian passports will be accepted for purposes of identification of Nigerians in South Africa. As a result, Nigerians are no longer required to move about with their original passports for identification.

In light of the above, the Mission calls on Nigerians to visit the Consulate General at their earliest convenience to obtain certified color copies of their passports. Applicants will be required to present the original passport bearing their South African visa/permit, and to sign an affidavit affirming ownership of the passport.

DHA’s acceptance of certified color copies is part of the Mission’s ongoing engagement with South African authorities on challenges facing the Nigerian community, including the high incidence of lost passports. With this development, the Mission advises all Nigerians to safely store their passports in secure locations to prevent loss or theft.
