Exclusive Interview with The Grace Ola

Oyinkansola A. Ogunyinka ‘The Grace Ola’ is a student of Mass Communication at Covenant University, majoring in Public Relations and Advertising. She is the author of “WHERE THE LOTUS GROWS”, freelance content writer, events planner and food lover.

She launched her first book on Saturday 6th July 2019, at the University of Lagos Afe Babalola Hall, Lagos Nigeria.

The Lotus Grows” – an adventure of love through tragedy, a story of hope and restoration from depression – written by Oyinkansola Ogunyinka Amazing-Grace at 18 and as a 400 level student of Covenant University. Lagos Nigeria.

In her speech at the Launching Oyinkansola Ogunyinka Amazing – Grace said. Standing on existing protocol, I would like to welcome you all and thank you again for showing up to celebrate this August occasion with me.

I am so excited to be here, before you today, about to share a part of myself with you. I am a little scared about what the turnout will be when you see the stories I have painted with words but I am even braver because I have learned in my 18 not-so-long years on earth that you can either try and succeed, try and fail or go to the grave, as a man or woman who never tried. That said, as human beings basically, we dominate life or it dominates us.

When I was a child, I thought like a child. Now, I am still a child. But uh…an older child. I stand before you today, a girl with big dreams to touch and positively change lives…dreams that are gradually becoming my reality, empowered by the grace, love and favor of God Almighty.

Honestly, I began writing ‘Where the Lotus Grows’ about four years ago. I know, it’s been a long time coming. I was in my last year of high school and I had a book in front of me. It was at that moment that the first scene came to me and I wrote it down. It’s funny how that first scene although initially abandoned has evolved into a story that is so timely in today’s Nigeria and even the world at large.

That scene was an insight into the life of a man, who had suffered immense pain and tragedy, battling depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a man who had resolved to take his own life but for grace. I wrote that four years ago when mental illness and health was hardly acknowledged in Nigeria. Today, many edits and rewrites later, I would say it has morphed into a story that will give hope where all has been lost and birth healing in the least expected ways.

The book gets its title from a unique flower of the Water Lily family, Lotus. And contrary to what some people may be thinking, the book is not a guide on how to grow the Lotus flower, sorry to burst your bubbles. Truly, the several meanings derived from the beauty, growth and characteristics of the lotus inspired me to name the book. ‘Where the Lotus Grows’ is actually a metaphor that represents the book’s essence. As a lotus emerges and blooms unspoiled and pure from murky waters, the book leads you through the characters’ pain, tears and fears. What’s more? It’s a love story. And I mean, come on, who doesn’t love?

My deepest gratitude is to God for the talent and divine guidance he gave me to write this book to His glory, not my words but His through me. I say a big thank you to my amazing parents for their endless support all through this project. I wouldn’t be here without you, my brother and all my wonderful friends and family members who pitched in their time, energy and skills to make today a success. Special thanks to Esther Omemu for allowing me use her as my personal critic for the past four years. I appreciate you and I will keep coming to you for advice so get ready.

I will like to appreciate the entire Pettysave team for coming out to support me today as well. Thank you very much for making me feel at home from the moment I started working with the team up until now. I look forward to saving more money and growing richer via the Pettysave platform. Trust me guys, you seriously need to save and grow rich with Pettysave. Thank me later. Lastly, to all the amazing sponsors of this event, Dano, Minimie, MunchIt, Quickkpromo, Christ Vision College and Afro Creative Group, thank you for partnering with this young girl who had a dream.

I am in the labor market now. Please help my hustle and buy the book.

Like someone said and I paraphrase, ‘Life is like a leaf, falling off a low-hanging tree branch. Time cannot be held down. So, live fully now.’ Thank you and God bless you as you read. I hope you draw strength and inspiration from my words in this perfectly imperfect world.
